Being a huge fan of good films and TV shows, I’ve recently become somewhat addicted to subscription services such as Netflix and Now TV. The only one I hadn’t explored much was Amazon Video, but after Gael Garcia Bernal won a Golden Globe for his work on ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, I knew I needed to use my 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime and give the show a chance. And I am truly glad I did.

Sendo uma grande fã de bons filmes e televisão, ultimamente tenho andado viciada em serviços por subscrição como o Netflix. O único que ainda não tinha explorado muito era o Amazon Video, mas depois de Gael Garcia Bernal ter ganho um Golden Globe pelo seu papel em Mozart in the Jungle, soube que tinha de usar os 30 dias de experiência grátis do Amazon Prime e dar uma oportunidade a esta série. E estou tão contente por o ter feito!

Firstly, some context: Gael Garcia Bernal (GGB) is a Mexican actor who has become famous for amazing movies such as ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ and ‘No’, both of which are incredible, and among my all time favourites.

When I heard he was in a show that won the Golden Globe for ‘Best TV Show – Comedy or Musical’, I took notice!

Algum contexto: Gael Garcia Bernal (GGB) é um actor Mexicano que se tornou famoso com as suas participações em filmes como ‘Os diários de Che Guevara’ ou ‘Não’, ambos incríveis filmes que fazem parte dos meus favoritos de sempre.

Quando soube que ele estava num filme que tinha ganho um Golden Globe para melhor comédia, prestei atenção! 

‘Mozart in the Jungle’ revolves around the lives of the musicians in the fictional New York Symphony, mainly their new, visionary, slightly eccentric conductor and Hailey, a talented oboe player who is still very green, but aspires to one day be able to play in the Symphony as well.

Mozart in the Jungle passa-se em torno das vidas dos músicos na (fictícia) New York Symphony, especialmente do seu novo, algo excêntrico, maestro, e de Hailey, uma oboísta ainda um pouco verde, mas que ambiciona tocar um dia na orquestra.

GGB as Maestro Rodrigo de Souza is beyond words: wacky and eccentric but sure of his vision, he is talented, innovative, charming, gentle, honest, and most of all absolutely hilarious! It’s a fantastically multi-layered role that fits GGB like a glove.

GGB como o Maestro Rodrigo de Souza é fenomenal: excêntrico mas seguro do futuro que vê para a sua orquestra, Rodrigo é talentoso, inovador, cheio de charme, gentil, honesto e, acima de tudo, absolutamente hilariante! É um papel com várias camadas, perfeitamente adequado para o GGB.

Hailey is a great portrait of the younger generations of today, in a big city trying to make it big in the industry and to find their place with friends and in life. She’s innocent but at the same time clever and assertive, sweet but not sickly, and is an example of the twists and turns life can take you on before you get to where you want to be. The character impressed me because although she’s fresh and sweet, she’s still got a modern, quick-witted sense of humour, and can snap an answer back in any situation. She’s gutsy, she’s truthful, super enthusiastic and shows a true love for music.

A Hailey é um fantástico retrato das gerações mais novas de hoje, numa cidade grande a procurar o sucesso na sua área, e a tentar encontrar o seu lugar junto dos amigos e na vida em geral. É inocente mas ao mesmo tempo esperta e segura, doce mas não enjoativa, e é um óptimo exemplo das voltas que a vida dá até conseguirmos chegar onde queremos. A personagem da Hailey impressionou-me porque embora seja doce, tem ao mesmo tempo um sentido de humor moderno e perspicaz, tendo uma resposta em qualquer situação. É corajosa, verdadeira, entusiasta e mostra um verdadeiro amor pela música. 

I have also been loving the character of Cynthia as a contrast to Hailey – she’s a successful cellist, experienced in the orchestra – and the background shenanigans! While Hailey is our way in to the world of the Symphony, Cynthia as the more experienced musician takes us in to the politics behind it and the off-stage lives of musicians.

Também tenho adorado a personagem Cynthia, como contraste com a Hailey – Cynthia é uma violoncelista de sucesso, experiente na orquestra – e nas aventuras de bastidores! Enquanto a Hailey é a nossa forma de entrar no mundo da Symphony, a Cynthia é a música mais experiente que nos mostra as politiquices de bastidores, e as vidas dos músicos fora de palco.

I’m also a huge fan of classical music, there’s something incredibly moving about hearing an orchestra, so this show caters right to me. But I do feel that it will be a fantastic way to open this type of music to new generations, new people, and that’s the magic of it too!

The splashes of Latin American music in some episodes fit in perfectly with the show, and add an extra (delightful) flavour to a show with a Latin lead. My particular favourite was the scene in the first episode with Aleh’s ‘Pra não parar de sambar’, which is such a fun tune!

Esta série é perfeita para mim, já que sou uma grande apreciadora de música clássica e fico sempre super comovida quando ouço uma orquestra. Mas acho também que a série pode ser uma óptima forma de abrir este tipo de música a novas gerações e novas pessoas, essa é também a sua magia!

Os salpicos de música latino-americana em alguns episódios funcionam muitíssimo bem na série e trazem um sabor extra (e delicioso) a uma série com um personagem principal latino. A minha preferida foi a cena do primeiro episódio com ‘Pra não parar de sambar’ de Aleh – uma música contagiante e cheia de ritmo!

The show is truly entertaining, with really good, truthful character development, witty storylines and dialogues, excellent humour and music beautiful beyond words. It’s also got quite short episodes, all under the 30 minute mark if I’m not mistaken, which makes it very dangerous – it’s too easy to binge watch!

‘Mozart in the Jungle’ é uma série bem divertida, com um desenvolvimento honesto das personagens, histórias e diálogos espirituosos, um humor excelente e música mais bonita do que consigo descrever. Para além disso os episódios são bastante curtos, todos com menos de 30 minutos se não me engano, o que torna a série perigosa – é demasiado fácil ver tudo de uma vez!

I highly recommend this, and can honestly say I hadn’t been so taken with a TV show straight away…maybe ever! 

Recomendo vivamente e posso dizer com franqueza que não me lembro de alguma vez ter ficado tão rapidamente viciada numa série!
