Movie award season is in full swing and with it my 2016 Oscar Movie challenge. Now, although this usually only includes films nominated for Best Picture, I am making two exceptions, today’s post being the first one. Creed is the new film based on the Rocky saga, created by Sylvester Stallone way back in 1976, that is 40 years ago. This new film comes from the hand of Ryan Coogler who directed the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station back in 2013 and picks the Rocky story from the perspective of a new character, played by Michael B. Jordan.
A temporada de prémios de cinema está aí e com ela o meu Desafio de filmes dos Oscars 2016. Esta lista normalmente só inclui os filmes nomeados para Melhor Filme, mas este ano faço duas excepções, sendo o post de hoje a primeira. Creed é o novo filme baseado na saga Rocky, criada por Sylvester Stallone no longínquo ano de 1976, há 40 anos. Este novo filme é-nos trazido por Ryan Coogler, que em 2013 realizou o filme Fruitvale Station, e pega na história de Rocky pela perspectiva de um novo personagem, interpretado por Michael B. Jordan.
Story // História (no spoilers!)
Creed follows Adonis Creed’s journey as he works to become a professional boxer like his father before him. His father, of course, was Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa’s one time rival turned coach and best friend who tragically died in the fight that was the height of cinematic Cold War, in Rocky IV (if you haven’t seen it, do, it’s AMAZING). Adonis, aka Donnie, goes to Philadelphia in search of Rocky (Sly Stallone, obviously) and asks him to be his coach. While there he also meets and falls for Bianca (Tessa Thompson), a talented singer who is his downstairs neighbour and shows him another side of Philly life.
The movie (as usual) starts off slow, setting up the whole story, getting to know the characters and what drives their life, their choices. But then it picks up and it’s an emotional rollercoaster right until the very end.
Creed segue o percurso de Adonis Creed enquanto este treina para se tornar um boxer profissional como o seu pai. O seu pai que, claro, era Apollo Creed, o rival tornado treinador e melhor amigo de Rocky Balboa que morreu tragicamente no combate que representou o auge da Guerra Fria cinematográfica, no filme Rocky IV (se ainda não viram, vão ver, é FANTÁSTICO). Adonis, ou Donnie, viaja até Philadelphia à procura de Rocky (Sly Stallone, claro) e pede-lhe que seja seu treinador. Lá Donnie conhece também Bianca (Tessa Thompson), uma cantora talentosa que é sua vizinha de baixo e lhe mostra um outro lado da vida em Philly.
O filme começa (como é costume) lento, dando tempo para criar o contexto da história, conhecer os personagens e o que guia as suas vidas, as suas escolhas. Mas depois ganha ritmo e é toda uma montanha russa de emoções até ao último momento.

Characters // Personagens
Adonis is a complex character. He struggles with his origins, and wants to prove himself not just to the world, but to himself. In classic Rocky style, Donnie ‘s fight is “you against you” (again, see Rocky IV). Michael B. Jordan is fantastic – he brings both the tough fighter guy, but also the broken, hurt man who feels like he has something to prove. The journey he takes his character in from beginning to end of this film is incredible to watch, and paves the way to more character development in the next films.
Adonis é um personagem complexo. Debate-se com as suas origens e quer mostrar o seu valor não só ao mundo, mas a si mesmo. No estilo clássico de Rocky, a luta de Donnie é “tu contra ti” (mais uma vez, ver Rocky IV). Michael B. Jordan é fantástico – traz ao personagem não só o lutador durão, mas também o homem magoado, quebrado, que sente que tem algo a provar. A viagem em que ele leva o personagem do princípio ao fim deste filme é incrível de ver, e estabelece o caminho para um maior desenvolvimento do personagem nos próximos filmes.
Bianca is a sweet girl, talented, confident, sure of herself, who wants to live the best life she can. She sticks by Donnie and supports him through his training and fights. Much like Adrian in the first film, she’s very much a support for the fighter, which leaves a lot of space for the development of her character and their love story in the upcoming sequels.
Bianca é uma rapariga doce, talentosa, confiante, segura de si e que quer viver a melhor vida possível. Fica com o Donnie e apoia-o durante os seus treinos e lutas. Muito como a Adrian no primeiro filme, Bianca é especialmente o apoio do lutador, o que deixa muito espaço para desenvolver a personagem e o romance entre os dois, nas sequelas.
Rocky, for me, absolutely steals the show. He is older now, and has lost his wife, his best friends (Apollo and Paulie, his brother in law) and his son, who has moved away. While initially Rocky resists training Donnie, eventually he agrees and the two form a bond as close as family, which sees them supporting each other as they fight for their futures. Sylvester Stallone gives what is hands down the best performance of his career: Rocky is still as funny, simple, humble, as ever, but he is now also hurt, broken, older. Stallone portrays all of this absolutely beautifully, with such honesty and sentiment that I swear, the other Oscar nominees for Actor in a Supporting Role should just concede now. It’s such a moving performance, so worth the recognition.
Para mim, o Rocky é a verdadeira estrela deste filme, apesar do seu nome já não fazer parte do título. Está mais velho e perdeu a sua mulher, os melhores amigos (Apollo e Paulie, o cunhado) e o filho, que se mudou para longe. Embora inicialmente Rocky ofereça resistência à ideia de treinar Donnie, ele acaba por concordar e os dois formam uma ligação familiar, onde se apoiam mutuamente enquanto lutam pelos seus futuros. Sylvester Stallone tem aqui a melhor actuação da sua carreira: Rocky continua a ser engraçado, simples, humilde como sempre, mas é agora também um homem triste, quebrado, envelhecido. Stallone representa tudo isto maravilhosamente, com uma honestidade e emoção tais que eu digo já, os outros nomeados para o Oscar de Melhor Actor num Papel Secundário deviam já admitir a derrota. É uma actuação super emocionante, mesmo merecedora desse prémio.

What I thought // O que achei
I loved everything. This was the perfect way to revisit our good old friend Rocky Balboa. It’s as inspirational and as moving a story as the original Rocky was all those years ago, but it’s also modern and fresh. Couldn’t have asked for anything more.
Gostei de tudo. Esta foi a maneira perfeita de visitar o nosso bom velho amigo Rocky Balboa. É tão inspirador e emocionante como o filme original há tantos anos, mas é também fresco e moderno. Não podia ter pedido mais.
