With the end of August comes the end of the summer holidays, after a few days very well spent in the company of several generations of family. Now that I’m back in Lisbon, I wanted to share my notes on a couple of places we visited during short day trips around Portugal…
O mês de agosto levou consigo as férias de verão e uns dias muito bem passados na companhia de várias gerações de família. Agora que estou de regresso a Lisboa, quero partilhar convosco alguns momentos dessas férias: os passeios que fiz “pelos caminhos de Portugal”…
Caldas da Rainha
I didn’t take any pictures in Caldas but I spent some great days there and got to know this very lovely town a tiny bit better. From the fruit market, to the D. Carlos I park, to the Bordallo Pinheiro factory store (which is absolute heaven, where I’m concerned) – it’s definitely worth a visit!
Não tenho fotografias para vos mostrar mas passei uns dias maravilhosos na zona das Caldas e fiquei a conhecer um bocadinho melhor uma cidade muito simpática. Desde a praça da fruta, ao parque D. Carlos I, à loja de fábrica da Bordallo Pinheiro (que é, a meu ver, um paraíso) – vale bem a pena visitar!
Coimbra
Whenever we spend a few days in Figueira da Foz, we make time for a short trip to Coimbra. This is the site of one of the oldest universities in the world, and that’s exactly where we went this time. Several parts of the University are worth visiting, but my personal favourites are the ever magical Biblioteca Joanina (I’m a book worm, this place is my dream) and the Academic Prison (yes, really, they had their own jurisdiction and could have trials and arrest anyone connected to the university), which is the only medieval jail still standing in Portugal today.
There is a lot more to see in Coimbra as well, and the centre of town is very interesting: the Botanical Gardens, the Old Cathedral, the Almedina arch and tower and the Santa Cruz Monastery (where the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, is buried) are not to be missed!
Sempre que passamos uns dias na Figueira, há tempo para um saltinho a Coimbra. Desta vez fomos até à zona da Universidade. Há vários pontos na Universidade de Coimbra que merecem ser visitados, mas os meus preferidos são a sempre maravilhosa Biblioteca Joanina e a Prisão Académica, a única cadeia medieval ainda existente em Portugal.
Há muito para visitar por Coimbra, e o centro da cidade é muito interessante – o Jardim Botânico, a Sé Velha, o arco e torre de Almedina, e o Mosteiro de Santa Cruz são imperdíveis!
Alcobaça
Another short trip we took this summer was to Alcobaça, to visit the Monastery there. I only had a foggy idea of it’s kitchen from my previous visit, and nothing else…Note: I am that person who visits great palaces and monasteries and gets amazed at the kitchens. Still holding out hope that I am not the only one. Anyway, we visited and I went to check: yes, the kitchen is awesome, with a humongous chimney and a water with water brought in through a canal system. As you’d expect the rest of the monastery is very simple, but it’s also beautiful. The highlight for me are the tombs of D. Pedro I of Portugal and D. Ines de Castro – their tragic love story is the stuff of legend and it has fascinated me forever.
Decidimos visitar o Mosteiro de Alcobaça a caminho de uma segunda estadia nas Caldas – eu sabia que lá tinha estado, mas só me lembrava (não muito bem, diga-se) de uma cozinha impressionante. Nota: eu sou aquela pessoa que quando visita palácios e mosteiros fica maravilhada com as cozinhas. Ainda tenho esperança de não ser a única. E fui confirmar: a cozinha é mesmo fantástica, com uma chaminé que impõe respeito e um tanque com água corrente. O resto do mosteiro é muito simples, como convém, e muito bonito, destacando-se em particular os túmulos de Pedro e Inês, cuja lenda me fascina desde criança!
Porto
Porto and me don’t have the best relationship: it always rains whenever I visit to explore and it ends up being soggy and miserable…until this year!
I’ve been wanting to visit the Port wine cellars of Casa Ramos Pinto ever since I noticed Monica Geller (yes, from Friends) had a framed copy of their ‘The Kiss’ poster in her room. Added to that hearing huge praise for the francesinhas, a typical dish, at Santiago – a trip to Porto needed to happen.
The francesinhas at Santiago’s were delicious: generous portions, very tasty and the fries were scrumptious. Highly recommend this.
The Ramos Pinto Port cellars did not disappoint in the slightest. The visit starts at the museum, set in the company’s original offices which are beautifully decorated with furniture from the 1930s and several advertising posters that were created under the command of Adriano Ramos Pinto, a 19th century man with business and marketing skills that would put quite a few people of today to shame! The personal office of Adriano and his brother António Ramos Pinto is stunning, full of luxuries thought out to properly receive their clients for wine tastings (in a throne, no less!) and seduce them into buying more wine. Genius.
In the cellar itself we learn more about producing Port wine, what characteristics the Douro wine region has that makes it so special for its production, and also about the different types of Port there are: Ruby, Tawny and White. At the end of the tour, as if I wasn’t happy enough, there was a lovely wine tasting of a ruby and a white Port – have I mentioned I love Port?! Ps: if you’ve never tried white Port, get on it, it’s lovely. A cocktail suggestion: a little bit of white Port, some lemonade, ice and one lemon peel. Delightful!
We were really lucky as well with Rita, our guide. Aside from being really lovely, she explained everything very clearly and not in a ‘robot’ kind of way, she showed genuine interest on the story she was telling and made the visit all the more enjoyable.
Eu e o Porto temos uma história conturbada: sempre que lá vou para visitar chove-me em cima e o passeio acaba sendo miserável…até este ano!
Desde há vários anos, quando reparei no quadro que a Monica Geller (sim, a dos Friends) tem no seu quarto com ‘O Beijo’ da casa Ramos Pinto, que ando a querer visitar as caves da marca no cais de Gaia. Este ano combinou-se isso com o ouvir falar imensas vezes nas francesinhas do Santiago, e lá fomos.
Primeiro as francesinhas: são bem servidas, muito saborosas e as batatas fritas são de chorar por mais. Ou seriam se a francesinha em si não enchesse tanto! Recomendo vivamente.
Quanto às Caves Ramos Pinto, não me desiludiram nem um bocadinho. A visita tem inicio no museu da marca, os antigos escritórios, decorados com mobiliário da década de 1930 e vários dos cartazes publicitários criados sob o comando de Adriano Ramos Pinto, um homem do século XIX mas com uma visão de negocio e de Marketing que daria inveja a muita gente hoje em dia! O escritório particular de Adriano e Antonio Ramos Pinto é uma verdadeira maravilha, um luxo concebido para bem receber os clientes importantes (num trono!) e seduzi-los para que comprassem mais vinho. Este homem, como diria o outro, era um Senhor.
Na adega ficamos a aprender mais sobre a produção de vinho do Porto, sobre as características que tornam a região demarcada do Douro especial para a sua produção e ainda sobre os diferentes tipos de vinho do Porto: Ruby, Tawny e Branco. E no fim da visita, não estivesse eu já feliz da vida, surge a degustação de um Ruby e um Branco – já vos disse que adoro vinho do Porto?! Ps: se nunca experimentaram um Porto branco, tratem disso – é maravilhoso! Também tivemos imensa sorte com a nossa guia, Rita, que era super simpática e tinha muitíssimo jeito: conseguia explicar tudo com clareza, mas não de forma ‘debitada’, notava-se o interesse por aquilo que estava a transmitir, o que é óptimo e muito raro!
Costa Nova
A holiday in Figueira also means a visit to Aveiro and a quick stop by Costa Nova. I love stopping to admire the cute, traditional houses! We stopped to do just that, to have some very yummy bolacha americana (literal translation: american wafer) and walk along the Ria de Aveiro. It was a beautiful late afternoon, lovely weather, yummy wafer and excellent for a long walk! It’s so worth a visit.
Férias na Figueira também implicam sempre uma visita a Aveiro, e uma passagem pela Costa Nova. Desta feita paramos para explorar as casas típicas da zona, às riscas coloridas, e para comer uma bolacha americana enquanto passeávamos ao longo da ria de Aveiro. Estava um final de tarde lindo, com bom tempo e sem vento, a bolacha era deliciosa e aquela zona é optima para um passeio a pé. Se andarem pela zona, explorem, vale mesmo a pena.
